Extension Program Specialist I – San Angelo

Position:  Extension Program Specialist I at the Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center, San Angelo, Texas. Appointment is 100% Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, 12-mo. funded position.

General Duties and Responsibilities: Provide regional leadership in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for the agricultural crops (cotton, wheat, corn, grain sorghum, and other crops) produced in the Southern Rolling Plains region of Texas (Extension District 7). Provide IPM training and technical assistance to County Extension Agents regarding pest management for crops produced in District 7, as well as ancillary support to Districts 3 and 6. Cooperate with County Agents, IPM Agents, Extension Specialists, Research Scientists, and the IPM Coordinator to conduct applied research to develop sustainable and innovative IPM strategies to address local pest management needs concentrated in Tom Green and Runnels counties. Plan, conduct and evaluate Extension Education programs targeting pests affecting agricultural crops in District 7. The Program Specialist will be expected to organize a Steering Committee to help plan and validate outreach and research focus, operate a crop scouting program centered in Tom Green and Runnels counties, provide support and training to County Agents, and county educational programming, and conduct on-farm research trials to drive Extension programming. Provide leadership and team building with Extension Specialists, County Extension Agents and Extension Agents – IPM. The incumbent will serve clientele through applied research, information delivery, and development and use of appropriate training/teaching materials.

Administrative Relationships: The incumbent will be administratively located with the Department of Entomology at Texas A&M University, supervised by the IPM Coordinator and Associate Department Head for Extension Entomology. The Extension Program Specialist will be officed at the San Angelo Research and Extension Center and will work with faculty, staff, and administrative staff at the Center. The individual shall exhibit collegiality to all faculty, staff, students, clientele groups, and administrators, and cooperate and collaborate with Department and Center Faculty, District Extension Administrators, Regional Program Directors, County Extension Agents-Ag/NR, and Extension Agents-IPM.

Qualifications:  B.S. in entomology or closely related field and five years of related experience is required, or M.S. (completed or anticipated completion by September 1, 2022) in entomology or a closely related field. A M.S. is preferred. Quantifiable knowledge and experience in the planning, design, implementation and evaluation of field experiments and educational programming of pest management tactics is essential. Candidate must have demonstrated ability to work closely with agricultural producers and diverse audiences, to communicate effectively (both oral and written), and to function effectively as a team member or leader. The candidate must be willing to work closely with agricultural chemicals including fertilizers and pesticides.

Facilities: The San Angelo Research & Extension Center houses roughly 10 faculty and 25 staff members. The Southern Rolling Plains region of Texas is a predominantly rural and agriculturally dominated area that typically plants approximately 1 million acres of cotton, 1 million acres of wheat, 175,000 acres of sorghum and 42,000 acres of corn. Grower-cooperator fields provide excellent opportunities for field research. The Center has around 100 acres of farmland and a limited supply of farm equipment, a fleet of vehicles, maintenance shop, and chemical storage facility.
